Embedded systems are increasingly running multiple applications on shared storage. At the same time, developers need to maintain strict control over data access, system reliability and resource usage.
To address these requirements, our partner Tuxera has released EdgeFS 3.0. This major update expands POSIX compatibility, introduces file ownership and permissions, brings Windows support to the userspace driver and provides more flexibility when formatting storage volumes.
A POSIX-like file system for embedded systems
Tuxera EdgeFS is an embedded, POSIX-like file system designed for resource-constrained and mission-critical devices. It provides transactional protection for critical system and user data, including in environments where unexpected power loss may occur.
EdgeFS is intended for applications in sectors such as automotive, industrial automation, smart energy and defence. These systems often combine limited memory and processing resources with strict requirements for data integrity, predictable behaviour and long operational lifecycles.
With EdgeFS 3.0, Tuxera makes it easier to develop and port Linux-oriented applications for these embedded environments.
File ownership and permissions
One of the most significant additions in EdgeFS 3.0 is support for POSIX-style ownership and permissions.
Files and directories can now be assigned user IDs, group IDs and the complete set of mode bits. Access control is enforced by the file system itself.
This provides a native foundation for separating data between applications, processes and user contexts. It is particularly relevant for connected devices that run multiple services on shared storage, where unrestricted access to files can create security and reliability risks.
Expanded POSIX compatibility
EdgeFS 3.0 introduces several features that bring its behaviour closer to standard POSIX file systems. These include:

- Deleting files while they are still open

These additions reduce the effort required to port existing software. Applications can be developed or prototyped on a standard Linux host and subsequently moved to EdgeFS with fewer platform-specific changes.
This can shorten development cycles while helping teams maintain a more consistent codebase across host and embedded environments.
Userspace driver now available on Windows
The EdgeFS userspace driver previously available through FUSE on Linux can now also run on Windows using Dokany.
Developers can therefore access, inspect and test EdgeFS volumes from either Linux or Windows. This is useful for development, integration, production and diagnostic workflows, particularly in organisations where engineering and support teams use different host operating systems.
Supporting both platforms also reduces the need to maintain separate tools for working with EdgeFS storage images.
Flexible inode configuration
EdgeFS uses inodes to store information about files and directories. With EdgeFS 3.0, the number of inodes can be configured explicitly when formatting a volume.
Alternatively, the formatter can automatically select a suitable inode count. This is useful when a product must support storage volumes with different capacities or configurations.
Developers can optimise a volume for a known number of files or allow EdgeFS to select a configuration for variable deployments. This makes provisioning easier across fixed embedded partitions, removable storage and differently sized product variants.
Supporting modern edge applications
Embedded devices are taking on increasingly complex roles. Automotive controllers, industrial equipment, energy systems and autonomous devices may run multiple applications while collecting and processing growing amounts of operational data.
In these environments, the file system is an important part of the device’s security and reliability architecture. It must protect data, control access and work within strict resource limitations.
The additions in EdgeFS 3.0 help development teams address these requirements while retaining a familiar POSIX-style development model.
